Meet Gilberte Labrie,
Gilberte was the caretaker of her husband with Alzheimer's disease

Thanks to the Alzheimer Society, I didn’t feel alone. They gave me advice and support, and as a result I felt better equipped to deal with this ordeal.

- Gilberte Labrie

Roger was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease 5 years ago at age 62. He passed away just a few weeks ago. During this time, his wife, Gilberte, never left his side. “I had to retire earlier than expected to take care of him,” explains Gilberte.

Roger’s disease progressed rapidly, making him increasingly dependent on his wife. “I had no more time to attend to my affairs or to rest and recharge my batteries.” Overwhelmed, Gilberte turned to the Alzheimer Society. “They immediately offered to help me,” says Gilberte.

Roger was enrolled in daily activities adapted to his needs, allowing him to socialize and use the abilities he had left, which, says Gilberte, helped boost his self-esteem and morale. Knowing that her husband was in good hands, Gilberte took advantage of the respite to take care of her own needs. “I attended group meetings where I met other people living through similar situations. This not only helped me cope better, it broke my isolation and allowed me to build a support network,” adds Gilberte.

Today, Gilberte wants everyone to know how grateful she is to the Federation of Quebec Alzheimer Societies. “The 20 Alzheimer Societies in Quebec help improve the quality of life of people living with the disease and their families. My name is Gilberte Labrie and I am living proof that donating to Health Partners - Quebec works.

The Federation of Quebec Alzheimer Societies is the provincial spokesperson for the twenty (20) regional Alzheimer Societies around Quebec. Thanks to programs and services supplied by the 20 Alzheimer Societies, the Federation represents, supports and defends the rights of the 125 000 Quebecers with Alzheimer’s, their family and their caregiver.

The Federation of Quebec Alzheimer Societies contributes to research programs that would help us to have a better understanding of the causes of Alzheimer's and related disease, to find a treatment and hopefully a cure.
